Mark Webber of Red Bull Racing will not let past overshadow his present – Formula 1 news
Memories of the 2010 race at Yas Marina might affect Mark Webber’s performance this year as teams meet once again at the 2011 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The Red Bull driver however has clearly stated that he does not want his past to overshadow his present performance. He said this ahead of the first free practice session of the penultimate race of this season.
Webber would have clinched the championship in 2010 at Yas Marina, only if he had won the race and Alonso had not finished second. The situation however did not end in Webber's favour and took a turn at the very last moment.
The 35-year-old Australian was at the second spot behind Fernando Alonso of Ferrari when the two entered the season’s finale race. The season however drew to a close with utter disappointment for both Webber and Alonso when Sebastian Vettel who was at the
third spot on the drivers’ championship, won the race securing the 2010 championship putting Alonso on the second place.
Webber said, “There will obviously be some emotion - that's the case everywhere we go because all tracks have memories. It was obviously a disappointing time for me after the race last year, for example. But I won't be dwelling on that - and I'm sure Fernando
won't either. Once you get in the car, all that has gone and you just enjoy driving again.”
He did however hint while writing for a BBC column that there will be a slight unease, and flashbacks of past “would be a bit uncomfortable” for him. With that saying, he also emphasised on the fact that this has nothing to do with the venue or the track.
“That might have been the race where the championship was finally handed over, but it was - and is - won and lost at lots of venues around the world, so we're not going to get too hung up on what happened at one track,” he said.
Webber also stressed that he will not be thinking too much about what happened here last year as that might lead to a loss of focus. He will make sure that he puts in his best effort during this year’s race at the Yas Marina Circuit and just enjoy the drive.
Let’s see how Webber performs at the 2011 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix scheduled for Sunday, November 13, 2011.
