Mark Webber refuses to give up, will fight back in the upcoming races
Red Bull’s driver, Mark Webber refuses to give up as F1 reaches its concluding phase. The Australian is bent on fighting and clinching the top spot from the resurgent Fernando Alonso. Before the Korean Grand Prix, Webber was leading the pack with 14 points
but with a disastrous result in the Far East, he is now reeling 11 points behind Ferrari’s Spaniard driver. Webber retired in Korea during the 19th lap which allowed Alonso to seize the initiative.
However, Webber is confident that he will stage a comeback in the upcoming races. Red Bull has so far enjoyed a successful season with 14 pole positions and 7 wins. Commenting on Korean GP, Webber said, “It was a pretty extraordinary race and it's a closed
things up at the top of the world championship. But I absolutely believe that I can win the title. I'm going to relish these last two races in Brazil and Abu Dhabi. To be racing against guys of Fernando's calibre is very rewarding and beating them is what
sport at this level is all about.”
Webber wasn't the only driver who had a bad race as his team-mate Sebastian Vettel also crashed out during the race which made Korean GP pointless for the Red Bull. Vettel had taken pole positions in the last two races but both of them went in vain as he
successively failed to finish the races. Vettel stated, “Nothing is going to change in my approach to the final two rounds. My [engine] failure makes everything more interesting and difficult. But it is still possible. I am going to fight until the end.”
On the other hand, Fernando Alonso admitted that Red Bull still has the advantage in order to clinch the title. The new championship leader is expecting last two races to be tough and he believes that battle for the title will go down to the wire. Alonso
has shown incredible resilience and fighting spirit this season as he fought back from the bottom of the table to clinch the top spot.
After winning the Korean Grand Prix, he now enjoys a healthy 11 points lead over Mark Webber whereas Hamilton and Vettel are 21 and 25 points behind the Spaniard respectively. Now, if Alonso wins the upcoming Brazilian Grand Prix and Webber ends the race
lower than 5th, then he will win the championship. Commenting on it, the two-time World Champion said, “Yes, that's true - and if Red Bull miss their plane to Brazil, that's another way to be champion. The odds remain in favour of Red Bull. In Korea I have
only guaranteed to be fighting in Abu Dhabi in the last race of the season.”
Nevertheless, Alonso expects more performance from Ferrari if they want to seal the title in Brazil. Red Bull produced some strong performances in Korean GP’s qualifier as its both drivers posted impressive times. Alonso believes that the only way to beat
Red Bull is to become more competitive. He maintained, “Red Bull showed us again in Korea that they are stronger than us, and that will be the same in Brazil and Abu Dhabi as well. What we need is another small step forward to be competitive. We must be on
the podium. If someone beats us now, congratulations -- winning or losing will depend on who is faster.”
Moreover, former Ferrari driver, Jean Alesi criticized Red Bull and claimed that its strategy was responsible for the Korean debacle. According to Alesi, Red Bull made a huge blunder by not forming a hierarchy between its drivers. On the other hand, Ferrari
has been following this type of establishment for many years and it is one of the reasons behind their success. Jean Alesi said, “They needed to take advantage of the fact that they had the best car. It's doubtful they will have the same advantage next year,
so you have to say they have mismanaged this season. I think they've missed a great opportunity.”
