Mark Webber says Fernando Alonso quick but Red Bull need more speed for the race – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Formula 1 driver Mark Webber has said that Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso showed some good speed in the second Free Practice session of the Canadian Grand Prix of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
However, the Aussie driver urged Red Bull to produce more pace if they are to challenge the likes of Alonso in the qualifiers and in the race on Sunday.
Webber’s run in the second session was hindered by a couple of red flags which were induced because Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi and Virgin Racing Team’s Jerome d’Ambrosio hit the barriers and the session was stopped.
The Aussie’s run was hindered after the crash and he only managed the seventh fastest time of the session.
He said, “We were a bit compromised with the red flags at the end of P2, so we could have had a smoother end to the final session, but it wasn't too bad. We tried different fuel loads today and now we just need to chip away and get the car a bit quicker.”
“Fernando was quick but we need to get a bit more pace. It was not too bad. We drove around and are not quite quick enough yet. The pace is pretty close but we need to find a bit more pace at the moment,” commented Webber.
Webber’s teammate Sebastian Vettel also visited the barriers in the first free practice session and damaged his car. However, his car was back on track in the second session and he managed to post the second fastest time of the session.
Webber added that the weather is going to be tricky over the next few hours which will probably spice up the race more on Sunday.
The Aussie is third on the drivers’ championship table with 79 points most of which came in the last three races where he managed two podium positions in Turkey and Spain.
The third practice session and the qualifiers of the Canadian Grand Prix will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2011 which will be followed by the race on Sunday.
