Mark Webber says Pastor Maldonado’s win was surprising for him – Formula 1 news
Mark Webber has expressed his shock at Pastor Maldonado’s win at the Spanish GP.
The Aussie said that the Williams driver win was “an unreal result.” So far, the season has had five different winners from five different and that has resulted in the competition to remain fierce and open ended.
Unlike 2011 season which was largely dominated by the red Bull team 2012 has seen wins from unlikely teams such as Mercedes and Williams. Both teams struggled in 2011 but are looking strong in the current season.
Webber in his BBC column wrote that he was hugely surprised by the Williams victory. He added that it was not only Williams he was surprised about, the season has seen the field to increase in the number of winners.
“I saw the scoreboard on the race-control tower during the race and I would never have had my money down on Fernando (Alonso) not being able to do it, especially when he won the start. Pastor was the fifth different winner in five races this year. It's been
a very difficult season to predict, and it remains impossible to read,” said the Aussie.
He further added, “Up until China the races were very close, with the field closely packed together. Then in Bahrain and now Spain we've had some big gaps and the field has been spread out. In Bahrain there was a 20-second gap behind the guy who was third,
Lotus driver Romain Grosjean, which I fell into. But if I'd been that far behind in China I would have been outside the points.”
Webber has so far remained consistently close to making a podium finish but has not been able to do it. He finished fourth in all the races up to the Spanish Grand Prix. The race at Barcelona saw Webber fall behind and out of points as the both him and his
teammate Sebastian Vettel struggled with the newly update front wing on the Red Bull cars.
While Red Bull look into finding out why the front wing caused so much trouble for its drivers, it will be imperative for them come up with a solution as soon as possible in order to remain competitive.
