Mark Webber says change from Bridgestone to Pirelli was difficult to adapt – Formula 1 news
Red Bull’s Formula 1 driver Mark Webber has said that changing from 2010 Bridgestone tyres to 2011 Pirelli tyres was a really hard thing to do because small changes can affect a race.
The Aussie also added that sooner or later a win can be expected from him as he is finding some small improvements in his driving.
Webber is the only driver who was able to run down Sebastian Vettel’s dominance in the Qualifiers when he posted a fastest lap time in the Spanish Grand Prix qualifiers.
Apart from that little glory, Webber is finding it difficult to hold on to his grid position in every race of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
The reason Webber explains for his slow start and bad performance in the opening few races of the season are the Pirelli tyres.
“They are very different and the drivers are very sensitive to that (change). It's like a golfer or a tennis player changing his equipment. When you're at this level and trying to gain an edge with tiny details, the small changes can make big differences.
But it's up to the drivers to adapt,” explains Webber.
In the Spanish Grand Prix, Webber started really slow which saw Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso take the lead on the first corner. Although the Aussie driver has been able to convert his races into point scoring finishes but still he believes that everything should
be in perfect place to win the race.
“I hope I can continue my momentum of encouraging results and I hope to get my first win soon, because I was winning quite often last year,” commented Webber.
The Australian started the season from a poor performance but soon picked up his pace among the top three drivers of the grid. His qualifiers pace has been very good in the previous races but the Australian has really struggled on the Pirelli tyres.
Let’s see how he fares at the seventh round of the 2011 Formula 1 season in Montreal this weekend.
