Mark Webber says he gave midfield teams a taste of their own medicine at Valencia – Formula 1
Mark Webber said that he did what the midfield teams do normally at the recently concluded European Grand Prix.
Webber used the drive through the field strategy to finish fourth in the race. It was a highly successful race for the Red Bull driver as he started the race placed at 19th on the grid. The Aussie did well to finish at fourth but he had some help from an
unlikely source.
The race had almost 17 laps left when Michael Schumacher and Webber came out of the pits with the Aussie behind the German.
Schumacher was on fresh tyres wanted to move up and overtake as many drivers as he could. The seven time champion worked his up the order with emphatic style with Webber using Schumacher’s effort of making room to overtake drivers and moving closely behind
up to finish fourth as the Mercedes driver finished 3rd.
“I'm very happy with today,” Webber said. “We've had a tough weekend up until today. I wasn't too happy even in the middle of the race; strategy-wise you don't really understand what's going on, what people are doing and what's going to happen in the last
15% of the grand prix. Obviously there was a bit of attrition at the front today, which we'll take, and it's a very good day to me. The guys boxed down and did a very good job with the car overnight, managed to get it all working well and in the end we got
a lot of points.”
Webber admitted that the strategy he was going in with he did not know if it was the right one. He said that the safety car period did not help his case either as he needed to make another stop and the drivers on the prime were getting home from there which
in hindsight was the advantage he got as the prime was not able to get home from there because of the hot temperatures on the track.
Webber has remained consistent in the 2012 season so far and is still very much in contention for the drivers’ title, the future races will be important for him if he wants to move up the ranks.
