Mark Webber says he is very proud of his achievement at Silverstone – Formula 1 news
Mark Webber has said that he was “very proud” of his victory in the British Grand Prix.
Webber won Red Bull’s home race at Silverstone in skilful fashion. The Aussie was went on with the race almost unnoticed as he made his way through the race to topple Fernando Alonso.
Alonso lead the race throughout making sure that he took all pit stops at the right times and the Spaniard did just that leaving little for anyone to capitalise on. The only loop hole that Alonso left to be penetrated was that he used his compounds aggressively
and that is the loop that Webber used to his advantage very tactfully.
Alonso came out of his last pit stop with soft tyres and Webber who pitted a little earlier than the Spaniard had hard compounds on his car. The team even radioed Webber that Alonso is on soft tyres and trying to overtake him will be futile at that point
of the race.
Webber kept up with Alonso waiting for the grip on his tyres to wear out and with four laps to go in the race the Aussie made his move and went past Alonso to take the win.
Webber did admit after the race that he did not expect to win the race but was really pleased at the final result.
“It was a very interesting race,” Webber said. “I thought at the start that Fernando had very good pace but a bit of strategy at the end there [worked]. Obviously Fernando started on a different tyre but I never gave up, kept pushing and it didn't really
work out for Fernando at the end. It was very close for him so we were there to capitalise.”
“It's a very special victory for the team, just down the road and for all the guys it's been incredible for them. Also for Renault, again another victory here in the UK so I'm very proud today,” he added.
Webber said the race result just goes on to show that you should never give up and keep on pushing till the end and results will follow.
