Mark Webber says pit stop strategy didn’t pay off in 2012 Hungarian GP – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber has said that their decision to take three pit stops during the 2012 Hungarian Grand Prix didn’t pay off as he lost three positions.
Webber had quite a struggling weekend in Budapest and could only secure 11th grid position for the Hungarian GP. Afterwards, he performed quite convincingly during the start of the race and gained some crucial positions.
Moreover, he was at fifth place when he went for his third pit stop and unfortunately dropped off to 8th position towards the end of the race.
Later on, he said that they expect the contenders to face the issue of tyre degradation at the end. Therefore, they decided to go for another pit stop in order to strike back well in the race. However, their assumption didn’t prove out to be successful and
they failed to make any sound progress after their final pit stop.
“We were hoping that people would be in a bit more trouble at the end with the tyres,” said the Australian driver. “That's where we lost the three positions so fifth place was there. I was thinking of staying out, obviously we had a nice cushion and the
lap times were going pretty well, but we've had plenty of instances this year where people's [tyres] drop off a cliff.”
“In the end the strategy didn't really work out, we lost three places through trying something different. I was quicker, I just couldn't get the job done,” he added.
In addition, he said that since it was very difficult to overtake at Hungaroring, hence, he could improve his position after taking his last pit stop.
Presently, he is standing at second place in the drivers’ championship with 124 points. Furthermore, he is 40 points behind the Spaniard, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari who is currently leading the drivers’ standings with 164 points.
Over and above, he said that they need to make some considerable developments so as to improve the pace of their car RB8. He also said that they will surely make some essential preparation during the summer break to make a stronger comeback in the forthcoming
season.
