Mark Webber secures second position in Malaysian Grand Prix Free Practice Session – Formula 1 News
Mark Webber secured second position in the Malaysian Grand Prix Free Practice session 2. Webber was out in front with a fastest of 1 minute and 36.876 seconds making good mileage in his RB7. The McLaren’s duo, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, did a good
job bagging second and third positions respectively.
Jenson Button was only 0.005 seconds behind Webber after a tyre grip problem earlier on Friday. Button was ahead of his team-mate, Hamilton. Reigning Formula 1 champion, Sebastian Vettel, was in fourth behind the McLaren’s duo.
Fifth was Mercedes’ Michael Schumacher who did a fastest of one minute and 38.088 seconds. After an unsuccessful Melbourne grand Prix, Schumi was able to put some mileage on his car and check it for reliability. Schumi’s teammate, Nico Rosberg, finished
seventh and had a good time in his car, MGP-02. One concern for Mercedes was race speed because both drivers were considerably behind Red Bull.
Ferrari’s duo is still unable to make 2011 season a Red Bull vs. Ferrari season. Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso are still suffering from race speeds and finished well two seconds off pace than Webber.
Eighth was Renault’s Nick Heidfeld who did a good job in bringing the car in top ten after having a pretty bad FP1 session in which his car was badly damaged. His team-mate, Vitaly Petrov, also had a good run in the FP2 session and ended 13th. Toro Rosso’s
Jamie Alguersuari finished the top ten drivers list with a fastest of 1 minute and 38.846 seconds. Sebastien Buemi of Toro Rosso was almost 4 seconds behind the race leader, but did a healthy 31 laps.
Williams Duo, Pastor Maldonado and Rubens Barrichello, showed good competitiveness in their Cosworth powered machines and ended 11th and 12th. Sauber’s drivers, Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Perez finished 14th and 15th and Force India’s duo, Paul Di Resta
and Adrian Sutil, finished 16th and 17th respectively. Completing the grid were Virgin, HRT and Lotus drivers. All of the late comers faced major reliability and speed concerns.
The final Free Practice session will be on Saturday after which the Qualifiers will begin.
