Mark Webber thinks F1 drivers have become more aggressive – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver, Mark Webber thinks that due to the safety improvements in Formula 1, the drivers have become more aggressive than they used to be before.
During the Belgian Grand Prix, Romain Grosjean of Lotus, with an intention to gain easier positions during the start of the race, drifted into Lewis Hamilton of McLaren at the first turn. Resultantly, both the drivers lost control and Hamilton went onto
to the backside of Sauber’s Sergio Perez while Grosjean went over Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and fortunately just missed hitting the head of the Spaniard. Eventually, due to the severe accident, all the fours drivers had to face retirement. Afterwards, the
French man was hit by one-race suspension penalty.
Webber believes that the safety reforms have allowed the drivers to go more aggressive as they often miss to account for the consequences.
“The drivers have to take some responsibility,” Webber wrote in his BBC column. “In the last 10 years, the level of aggressiveness has ramped up a bit just because guys know that usually they'll be able to walk away from a crash.”
Although, he said that the drivers should take calculated risk on tack and should keep on learning from their experience in the sport so as to emerge as better racers.
“But you can be aggressive and safe or aggressive and unsafe. I've always said F1 is not a finishing school when it comes to racing,” the Aussie said.
Furthermore, he said that many talented drivers have joined the field this year while he pointed out just two of them which include Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado of Williams who have caused some distress in the season so far.
“Most of the youngsters who have come in have gone pretty well. This year, Pastor Maldonado and Grosjean have both had a few incidents,” he added.
In addition, he said that FIA should pay more attention towards the protection of the wheel as compared to the cages or the cockpits.
Over and above, he insisted that the drivers should comply with the rules and regulations and should respect them.
