Mark Webber wants to stay in Formula 1 longer than his new contract with Red Bull – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber has said that he wants to stay in Formula 1 longer than his new one year contract with his current team for 2013.
Webber’s agreement with the defending champions was going to end at the conclusion of this year. Moreover, he has been surrounded by many rumours that he may join Ferrari after this season.
However, he has recently signed a new deal with Red Bull for the next season and is aiming to be with the team till the end of his career.
“Although I did have talks with Ferrari , staying with Red Bull was right thing to do,” Webber said. “I pretty much told Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz and team principal Christian Horner two or three years ago that I would finish my career with Red
Bull. I'm sure everyone understands the lure of racing for Ferrari, but in the end there were just too many pros to staying at Red Bull Racing - it was as simple as that.”
In addition, he said that he has established a very sound relationship with his team. He also said that they have won two constructors’ and drivers’ championship consecutively in the last two years and he is aiming to come up stronger in the forthcoming
races so as to make his position stronger in this season’s title fight.
“I've been there since 2007, just two years after team was formed, and we have built a fantastic team,” he said.
The Australian driver took an amazing victory in the British Grand Prix held at Silverstone Circuit and became the second driver to claim two race victories in the season until now.
Presently, the Australian driver is standing at second place in the drivers’ rankings with 116 points. Besides, he is 13 points behind the leading driver, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and 16 points ahead of his teammate, Sebastian Vettel.
Over and above, he has been one of the most consistent performers in the season so far and it will be very interesting to see how he shows up in the approaching races.
