Mark Williams, Matthew Stevens one frame away from reaching last eight – 2011 Snooker World Cup
The current world number one player, Mark Williams and his teammate Matthew Stevens, who currently holds the 14th position in the world ranking, are now only one frame away to guarantee a qualification into the last eight of the 2011 PTT-EGAT
Snooker World Cup.
The pair, who is representing Wales, defeated Pakistan on Thursday by a frame score of 3-2 and has gained the top place in their respective group.
In the opening frame, the Welsh Potting Machine Williams comfortably downed Pakistan’s number one cueist Shahid Aftab to gain a 1-0 lead, which was further extended to 2-0 by his teammate Stevens as he outplayed Muhammad Sajjad in the second frame.
Williams and Stevens also won the following doubles frame to go in front at 3-0 before Pakistani players clawed back in the last two frames to reduce the deficit by 3-2.
The 36-year-old Williams, who lost to Sajjad in the fourth frame, admitted they had a good chance to qualify into the last eight but on the same note he said there are certain things which just happen and you cannot do anything about them.
“It's another win but the way you get through is by the number of frames you've won and match wins sort of don't count,” said Williams. “We were 3-0 up and could've nicked one of the last ones and guaranteed it. A few things could happen but we won't know
until tomorrow what we have to do and we might not have to do anything, added Williams.”
In the end, the three-time Crucible winner Williams commented on Republic of Ireland consisting of former world champion Ken Doherty and Fergal O’Brien who are going to be their next opponent.
Williams stated it is not a best-of-nine frame match so anything can happen in it but they will certainly try to secure a place in the quarters.
While speaking on his inclusion, he remarked, “We could play Ireland tomorrow and win 4-1 but we could also lose 4-1. If it was the best of nine we would thrash them.”
