Mark Williams aiming for another World Snooker Championship
World number one, Mark Williams is eyeing on this season’s World Snooker Championship and hopes it can help him stay on his ranking and can bring more accuracy in his game. The Welsh Potting Machine
had a scintillating last season, grabbing a couple of titles including the German Masters 2011 and Players Tour Championships (PTC) Event 1.
However, the start of 2011-12 Snooker Season hasn’t been a great one for the Welshman as he crashed out in the very first round of PTC Event 1 at the hands of China’s Q School pro tour card holder,
Li Yan, under the World Snooker Academy ceiling, in Sheffield.
Right now, the 36-year-old Williams is waiting to fly to Australia for his opening match of 2011 Australian Goldfields Open starting in July at Bendigo Stadium. The qualifying session of the event
is underway at the World Snooker Academy.
Former World Snooker Champion, Williams grabbed the world number one spot after his outstanding performance in the last season despite his semi-final defeat in World Snooker Championship 2011 against
John Higgins. However, to stay high ranked, Williams needs more major ranking victories and another World Snooker Championship title this season will be an icing on the cake.
While speaking to his Chinese fans on a local twitter-like website, Williams said, “I just want to try and do the best I can and hopefully stay up the rankings, but if I could manage to win the World
Championship once more that would be the icing on the cake for me. As I love playing in China and have a good record there and other overseas events.”
Williams must pull up his socks to maintain his rank as he has several top contenders for the number one spot like current World Champion, John Higgins, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Judd Trump, Mark Selby and
the Chinaman, Ding Junhui.
The player needs a strong performance in the new season when he faces all the big guns of snooker, and will be hoping to go all out against them. Despite losing at PTC Event 1, he can still make his
mark in the Australian event and sustain his top spot.
