Mark Williams beats Matthew Stevens to set up Neil Robertson clash – Snooker
The current World Number one player, Mark Williams, has gone into the semi-finals of the 2011 Shanghai Masters, as he outplayed his fellow countrymen, Matthew Stevens, by a frame score of 5-0 in a best-of-nine frames match yesterday, September 9.
The 2011 Bank of Communication Shanghai Masters tournament is currently underway at the Shanghai Grand Stage in Shanghai, China.
It was a commanding performance from the 36-year-old Welsh potting machine, Williams, who has lost only one frame as of yet in his three matches. Williams also showcased a magnificent break of 129 while claiming his berth into the semis.
Williams, who has won World Champion two-times in 2000 and 2003, afterwards admitted he is more than happy to get into the semi-finals.
"It's not often you win matches 5-0, and I've won two this week so I must have had a lot of luck," said Williams, who is chasing a fourth ranking title in China and seventh in Asia. "I scored well today and I'm in the semis so I'm more than happy.”
Williams, who is the only third player behind six-time world champion Steve Davis and seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry to win all three major ranking events in one season, told the media that Steven, who is also known as the Welsh Dragon, is a very
close friend of his and he claimed he has played with him since his childhood.
Williams added, "I grew up with Matthew and I'd rather have played anyone else. I hope he's done enough to get into the top 16 and the Masters. He's good enough to beat me 5-0 on another day."
Stevens, who currently holds the 14th spot in the world rankings, also shared his thoughts after the match.
Stevens said, "I didn't turn up and nothing went for me. Mark's the best player in the world and he punished me."
Mark Williams will now be up against the 2010 world championship winner, Neil Robertson, in the semi-final. Let’s see if Williams can also see off Robertson, as Robertson who is also a very dangerous player.
