Mark Williams becomes the first Welshman to make a 147 – Snooker news
The Welsh potting machine Mark James Williams became the first Welshman ever to produce a maximum of 147, playing against his opponent Robert Milkins.
The Welshman is also the third player ever, behind Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry, who has won all three major in a season and also has won 18 ranking tournaments, fifth of all-time. He has also been found as the best long ball potter in the history
of snooker.
Mark Williams also became the only sixth player to produce 147 at the World Championship. Robert Milkins, having a professional career of more than ten years, plays very well at times but that was a bad day for him as he could not perform at all and
lost to Mark Williams by a frame score of 10-1. However, Mark Williams played an outstanding game on the other end.
The scores were 9-1, when Williams broke the 11th frame. Robert Milkins tried for a long pot in a bit of frustration, as he was trailing Williams by 9 frames, and left his opponent with a few easy reds to start off with the
blacks. There were four open reds near the black ball and Mark took all of them with the blacks. From the fourth black he made the cue ball canon the reds getting another straight red for the black.
After the pot of sixth black and cannoning again the reds, he found himself in an excellent position for the maximum. That was the point from where he started concentrating for his first ever 147. Mark Williams made it clear to everyone when after
potting the 8th black he went out of position a bit but instead of going for any other colour, made a difficult black. He got appreciation from the crowd when was seen managing the difficult black’s pot and placing a red which was lying behind
the yellow, green and brown’s spot.
Coming back from that red onto the black again was the key to his maximum and he did come but this time had an even more difficult black to pot, as he again went out of the position and was left with a very thin cut this time. Mark pulled out a fabulous
shot from there with the rest landing within the reds again and got a round of applause from the audience.
Afterwards he was found only once in difficult position after potting the 11th black, but he got through it as well playing with the rest. When there were two reds left Williams chose the difficult one in the centre for the 14th black
and had a narrow escape there.
Since then he made it look very easy as he smoothly placed and potted all the colours, delighting the crowd at the Crucible Theatre.
Mark Williams is still present in the world of snooker representing his country. He was the world’s number 3 but this year after winning the German Masters 2011, held at Berlin, he has moved to the world’s number 2. In addition, he is being considered
as one of the strong contenders for the upcoming Welsh Open.
