Mark Williams considers Stephen Hendry clash at Benson and Hedges Masters most memorable
Welshman Mark Williams has played some tremendous matches in his professional career and has gone through some thrilling moments in his life at the baize. However, one match that he considers the
most memorable, was his battle against Stephen Hendry, in the Benson and Hedges Masters, at Wembley.
Williams came out an eventual winner after a long, tough battle, which saw both players battle it out until the 19th frame. The player still feels his heart pumping faster when he recalls the moment
he potted the last black against Hendry to take the match, 10-9. The 36-year-old was replying to his Chinese fans on a Chinese local website.
While replying to the fans, Williams said, “My most memorable must be without doubt is beating Stephen Hendry on a re-spotted black 10-9 in the Benson and Hedges Masters (1998) in Wembley.”
Welsh Potting Machine, Williams was 6-9 down to Hendry in the final when he bounced back into the game and took the match, grabbing four consecutive frames. Williams’ steady playing style brought
him to the brink of victory on February 8, 1998 against Hendry.
Speaking about his playing style on the website, Williams said, “I think I'm calmer and more relaxed than any other player, and I think that helps me when the pressure situations arise. Not too sure
if I'm more attacking than Ronnie, not much in it.”
He added, “I try my best not to get too down or disappointed with myself too much otherwise you are helping your opponent to beat you.”
Both Williams and Hendry have gone head-to-head a couple of times in the last two seasons, where Williams has been victorious both times. They met last time in second round of 12bet.com UK Championship
2010 where the Welshman took over Hendry by the scoreline of 9-6.
Beginning of 2011-12 Snooker Season has not been up to the mark for both Williams and Hendry as they crashed out of Players Tour Championships (PTC) Event 1 in the very first rounds at the hands of
Li Yan and Stephen Maguire respectively.
Currently, they are waiting for their opponents emerging out of the qualifiers of 2011 Australian Goldfields Open. The qualifying session of the event is underway at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield
and event will be held in July at Bendigo Stadium in Victoria, Australia.
