Mark Williams cruises past Mark Allen to enter semi-final of World Snooker Championship 2011
Welshman Mark Williams has stormed into the semi-final of the World Snooker Championship 2011 after defeating the Englishman Mark Allen by the score line of 13-5 at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield on Wednesday, April 27.
The double champion will face Ronnie O’Sullivan or John Higgins in the semi-final clash on Thursday.
The first session started with Allen’s 66 in the first frame but Williams took the frame at 73-66 firing a couple of decent small breaks. Allen replied with 59 in the next frame but missed to pot a red, and the 36-year-old Williams smashed a superb clearance
of 73 to take a 2-0 lead in the session.
The Pistol, Allen, was put under pressure but he fought back and clinched the second frame with 7-123 after he pocketed a fine break of 78 but Williams quickly took control over the game in the next frame and wrapped up the table in one visit at 125-0 as
he fired a sensational century break.
Allen desperately needed a positive start in the fifth frame but the Northern Irishman made a big mistake when he went for a safety but unfortunately, it did not work well for him. Williams stumbled upon the table and swept it with an outstanding knock of
78 to clinch the frame by 111-5.
Allen responded superbly and went two frames up after firing two terrific century breaks of 100 and 102 before the end of the first session with Williams leading at 5-3.
Williams emerged again in the second session more effectively as he cashed in on every mistake made by Allen. He took three consecutive frames before the end of the session hitting a couple of cracking century breaks of 104 and 113 and extended his lead
to 11-5.
Allen was way down to reach Williams in the third session of the best of 25 frames quarter-final as the ‘Welsh Potting Machine’ took less than 40 minutes to thrash the English cueman down with 13-5 and surge into the semi-final of the Championship.
The Ebbw Vale potter Williams will meet Ronnie O’Sullivan or the world number one John Higgins in his semi-final clash. Whoever his opponent is, the match will definitely be a thrilling encounter on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at the Crucible.
