Mark Williams leads Jamie Cope 12-4 in second session: 2011 Betfred.com World Snooker Championship
Mark J Williams held a commanding 12-4 lead against Jamie Cope after the second session of their best-of-25 frames match in the last-16 of the 2011 Betfred.com World Snooker Championship. The event is being staged at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, England.
The world number two, Williams, who previously ended the opening session with an impressive lead of 7-1, further extended the score-line in his favour today. However Jamie Cope also responded positively, as he clinched the last two frames to take the match
into the third session.
The first chance of the opening frame fell to Cope and he capitalised with a magnificent break of 96 to reduce the deficit to 7-2. However, he was a bit unlucky in the 10th frame, as he held a 21-point lead before Williams fluked a red and cleared the table
superbly to restore his six-frame lead at 8-2.
The third frame was a bit scrappy. A bout of safety play was seen among the players but in the end it was again the Welshman who came on the top. He also took the following frame with a dominant break of 46 to lead his opponent 10-2 before the mid-session
interval.
The first frame after the resumption was over within the blink of an eye, as the Welsh Potting Machine, Williams, fired up a mind-boggling century break of 106. He also took the following frame in similar fashion to leave his opponent down by 10 frames with
eleven to play at 12-4.
At that stage it seemed as if there wouldn't be an evening session for this match, as Williams needed just one more frame to secure his place in the quarter-finals. However, everyone was left flabbergasted when the world number fifteen, Cope, bounced back
into the game and managed classy breaks of 72 and 74 in the last two frames respectively.
The match has now gone into the evening session where both players will again fight it out for a place in the quarter-finals.
