Mark Williams looking forward to take Wales to World Cup glory – Snooker news
The current world number one snooker player on the planet Mark Williams is in Bangkok, Thailand with his teammate Matthew Stevens, who currently holds the 14th spot in the world rankings, to represent his country in the 2011 PTT-EGAT Snooker World Cup.
This event is taking place at the Bangkok Convention Centre in Thailand and Williams believes he can take his country to the World Cup glory.
The Snooker World Cup has been brought back to the calendar after a long time as it was last held in 1996 and after a 15-year break, it has returned to the scene.
Moreover, this time the Cup has returned with a new format according to which pairs will be playing five one-frame series.
Williams told the media he is excited about the World Cup as it has come after a long time and he hopes that this new format is not going to be a one-time affair.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “I am really looking forward to it. It is something completely different, it’s new and it’s me and Matt flying the flag and I hope this is the first of many times it takes place.”
This time the World Cup is offering $200,000 for the winner’s chest and Williams knows it is not an individual act so he will have to put in his best.
The Welsh Potting Machine, Williams, stated one plays for his partner as well and has to represent his country too.
“There is $200,000 for the winner and it’s something you need to put 100 per cent into because you are not just playing for yourself, you are playing for your partner and for your country,” said Williams.
In the end the 36-year-old Williams admitted he and Stevens are among the favourites to win the trophy but on the same note, he said it is a one-frame format so any team can upset them.
“We should be favourites to beat them but the format is one frame at a time and everyone knows that sort of thing is wide open,” added the world number one.
