Mark Williams of Wales disappointed after crashing out of 2012 Welsh Open
Welsh spectators present at the Newport Centre arena in Newport were expecting a topsy-turvy clash when their home favourite Mark Williams and the former three-time World Snooker Champion, England’s Ronnie O’Sullivan entered the arena and came at the table.
The second-round clash was just according to their hopes until the end of second frame but suddenly the situation changed and the match result disappointed the viewers.
Local hero, Williams was impressive in the second frame after he was nudged 1-0 down with a cracking 125 break by the Rocket in Round 1. He responded accordingly pocketing a sensational knock of 133 to pull level at 1-1 but as the pair started playing the
third frame, Williams’ performance began to fall and he gave away three frames to tumble down by the score line of 4-1.
Losing to O’Sullivan was indeed a great disappointment for the Welsh Potting Machine because he was being considered as the only hope for the title victory. The 36-year-old was not in his natural form even in his first round game against the Englishman,
Andy Hicks and nearly survived a brutal loss in the end due to his below par performance.
After his match against the Essex Exocet, Williams spoke to the local media, “How I’m number two I’ll never know.. The last two games have been awful. It was terrible. It was embarrassing out there the balls I was missing. I wanted to snap the cue over my
leg. I had a lot of chances, which is quite rare with Ronnie, but I played terrible again; Pitiful.”
The Welsh Wonder added, “I’m just not playing anywhere near the standard he’s playing. He’s the best player out there and if I was a betting man I’d chuck everything on him to win the World Championships.”
The 2012 German Masters champion, 36-year-old O’Sullivan has now moved into the quarterfinal stage of the 2012 Welsh Open where he will be meeting the 2011 UK Championship winner, Bristol’s Judd Trump.
The English duo has playing each other for the fifth time in the current season. The odds are against O’Sullivan though but due to his current performance, especially after 2012 German Masters, the Magician can turn the tables.
