Mark Williams ousts David Gilbert to reach quarterfinals of 2011 Australian Goldfields Open
Wales’ Mark Williams has made it to the quarter-final stage of 2011 Australian Goldfields Open after a stunning performance in the second round against Englishman, David Gilbert. Williams completely unsettled the World Snooker Qualifying School (Q School)
pro ticket winner and clinched a 5-2 win at the Bendigo Stadium arena on Wednesday, July 20.
Williams will next meet the Australian snooker ace Neil Robertson, or his compatriot Dominic Dale. Whoever his opponent might be, Williams will be a tough competitor, as he is playing impressively in this event, winning both of his encounters convincingly.
Robertson and Dale will go one-on-one on Thursday, July 21 at the same arena to decide who will meet Williams in the quarter-final.
Unlike his performance in his opening match against Barry Pinches, the former world snooker champion was quite satisfied with his game-play against Gilbert. Although he won against Pinches as well, he wasn’t happy with his performance in that match, as he
felt he didn’t play according to his standards.
In his post match remarks after winning to Gilbert at the Bendigo, Williams said, “It was a lot better today and I knew if I played like I did yesterday then I was going to get beaten. The way he started off helped me and I knew I had to play well. I should've
gone 2-0 up and when he was in the balls he didn't look like missing.”
The Welsh Potting Machine added, “I did a few different things just to get some momentum and it worked so I will keep doing it. I would probably prefer to play Neil as there would be a big crowd. All of the support would be on his side and I can handle that.
It would be a good occasion to play in front of his home crowd.”
The 36-year-old Williams fired two stunning knocks of 78 and 83 to get rid of Gilbert. Now, William is looking forward to face the Aussie, Robertson, in his quarter-final clash, as he expects huge crowd at the Bendigo Stadium arena.
