Mark Wilson eyes a position in the US Ryder Cup team – Golf News
Mark Wilson, ranked sixth in the US Ryder Cup Standings, sets his sight to be a part of the United States team in the Ryder Cup this year.
Wilson was talking to the reporters at the Innisbrook, the venue for the Transitions Championship, and said that he never thought of making the Ryder Cup team as it was not a part of his goal.
However, when he saw his name in the US team this year, he made his mind to make it his new target of the career.
"I have to play some pretty good golf the rest of the year to make it," said Wilson, who grew up outside Milwaukee in Menomonee Falls, Wis.
He continued, "At the beginning of the year I saw that it was on the schedule and at Medinah and I feel like that's the next step in my career".
He added, "I have won on the PGA Tour but I haven't played great in the majors. I think those two things kind of go together: contend in some majors and make a team. What better place to do it than in my hometown".
Wilson is a player who learns from his mistakes and always strives to bring improvements in his style of playing golf.
Last year, he earned a spot for the first time in the Masters Tournament and British Open after winning two of the first three tournaments of the season that he played.
However, he remained unimpressive and missed the cut in three major events among the four that he played.
Wilson said that he overanalyzed each major-event course and kept on changing equipments to bring better results.
However, he later found that he was giving excessive importance to the events and their playing requirements.
He should have taken them as normal events as others and should have played his normal game.
Therefore, he now plans to remain normal when entering the Masters in the coming month, while preparing himself for the Ryder Cup in September, 2012.
In 1992, Wilson lost to Tiger Woods in the US Junior Amateur finals by 2&1, a match play event.
He now believes that he has learned greatly in the past two decades, which can help him earn some wins in the prestigious Ryder Cup.
