Mark Wilson grabs his fifth PGA Tour victory at weather delayed Humana Challenge - Golf News
Mark Wilson from the United Stated carded a three-under 69 in the final round of the Humana Challenge, at the La Quinta Country Club, California, to lift the prestigious trophy.
The Humana Challenge was the first event of the 2012 PGA Tour that was hosted by the US Mainland. Prior to that, the initial two events were played in Hawaii.
The event in California saw huge variances in weather conditions on the course. The initial two days were clear and calm, as moderate winds swept across the field.
However, the Saturday afternoon saw a sudden change in the weather, when strong winds started to blow on the course, causing a delay in the final round.
Therefore, the final holes of the third round were finished on Sunday morning, where Wilson came out victorious.
Wilson, who has a total of 24-under-par 264 tournament score, had a two-stroke margin over John Mallinger, Johnson Wagner and Robert Garrigus at the end of the event.
Jeff Maggert was alone at the fifth position, with 21-under par 267. John Senden and David Toms were a stroke behind to share the sixth position.
Wilson did not have a good start to his final round when he bogeyed the par-three fourth and was one-over par on the front nine.
However, he managed to reel off four birdies on the back nine and gained a considerable lead to win the tournament.
When Robert Garrigus missed the eagle putt to get the lead, Wilson ended the Saturday evening with a birdie and remained on the top, consolidating his position.
"Robert and I, going back and forth, we really enjoyed that," Wilson said. "It just came down to 18, and I didn't want to give him a chance to make that putt to tie me. ... That's what we play for. You want somebody to win it, not necessarily to lose it".
Garrigus further moved back on the leaderboard when he missed an easy par putt on the 17th.
"We really couldn't see much," said Garrigus, who finished a third-round 61 earlier Sunday. "I could barely pick up the flag on 18. We had a great day, and it got pretty dark. I wish I could have read that putt a little better".
This was Wilson’s fifth victory on the PGA Tour. He was pleased at the end of the tournament as he hoisted the Bob Hope Classic trophy proudly with his wife and two sons.
