Mark Wilson has said that the main reason behind his downfall after a quick start to the 2011 season was his being out of focus of his game. He said he gave more attention to what he and his fans expected from him.
He was talking to the media prior to the Waste Management Phoenix Open, scheduled from February 2 to 5, 2012.
He said that he won the Sony Open and WM Phoenix Open in a three-week time at the start of the year 2011.
That was a time when he was regarded as the best player of the first month of the season.
However, he did not manage to maintain his consistency and remained winless throughout the remaining 2011 season.
In a similar fashion, he has now started his 2012 campaign and registered a win in early season when he defeated Robert Garrigus, John Mallinger and Johnson Wagner with a two-stroke margin in the Humana Challenge, played at La Quinta Country Club, California.
The golf experts have started talking about him, whether he will be able to hold onto his form in the remaining events of the season or he will repeat what he did in the past.
About his failure following his two wins last year, Wilson said that people started expecting higher from him and the ones he imposed on himself proved to be more intense and difficult to meet.
He started thinking of what he should do next, instead of what were the factors that brought him to the winning spot.
Therefore, he failed to tackle the pressure and continuously fell in each and every tournament he played afterwards.
“I put a little more pressure on myself and lost a little bit of the edge as a result,” he said.
“I felt like I was trying too hard the rest of the year instead of letting it happen, which is what I did the first two months of the year,” he continued.
“I just let it happen and let the golf come to me. You figure that out, so you think, 'I should just do it like that every week,' but it's easier said than done. You can't control all the bounces, you can only control so much. You really just have to enjoy
it for the game that it is,” he added.
However, he said that he learned many things in the past while playing against some of the good players on the PGA Tour, which has helped him in building trust in his game.
This will in turn help him in the coming events on the Tour for better finishes compared to the last year.
