Mark Wilson plays his career’s best round in the 2012 Humana Challenge to surge to the first position - Golf News
The United States veteran, Mark Wilson, fired the best round of his career, 10-under par 62, to reach atop the leaderboard after the second round of the 2012 Humana Challenge, at La Quinta, California.
He started the second round in an impressive style, with three consecutive birdies on the opening holes.
While making a spectacular eagle on the 11th, he already managed to record six birdies in total and went eight-under par in the round.
At that time, he thought for a while about the tournament record of 13-under par 59 that was set by Harrison Frazar. As Frazar was also playing in the event, he went to him and talked about it in detail.
"I don't know why the conversation went there ... but I thought about it," Wilson said.
After his career’s best performance, he is now sharing the top position with Ben Crane and David Toms, with an overall score of 16-under par 128.
Crane shot a nine-under 63 and Toms managed to card a seven-under par 65 in the second round.
The event, formerly known as Bob Hope Classic, has a history of low score finishes, as it features two of the easiest golf courses around the world.
This year, it is again expected to be a low scoring tournament and the weather is an added advantage for the players to score their best rounds of career.
There are no winds, shiny days and a perfect environment to make perfect shots.
"Everything has been much improved, and we got a much better field because of it," said Crane, who had just 48 putts in his first two rounds. "This is a great place for players to start their year, because it's like playing indoors".
Harris English, Rookie on the PGA Tour, also had a superb day when he shot a ten-under par 62 to tie for the fourth position, with Bobby Gates, Chris Kirk, and Camilo Villegas.
"That's what you've got to do out here," said English. "Put it in the fairway and then try to go out and get after it. I was getting my putter hot, and it was a lot of fun".
The least score of the day was made by Ryan Moore who, despite making two bogeys to open the round, managed to make an eleven-under par 61 to level the course record.
Apart from the low scores, the real test will come on the final day of the event, as heavy clouds and rain is expected on Saturday evening, which can result in a windy weather on Sunday.
