Mark Wilson pockets Phoenix Open title
American golfer Mark Joseph Wilson clinched the PGA Tour’s Phoenix Open on 2nd hole of a playoff leaving country-man Jason Dufner empty-handed on Monday. The Phoenix Open which was delayed due to frost and freezing weather gave all the players a tough time. Wilson, however, didn’t let the weather get to him and achieved his second PGA Tour victory after posting a nine-foot birdie putt on the second hole.
The ardent Greenbay Packers fan was really happy with his second victory in the three starts this year. Obviously, 2011 has turned out to be a good year for the Wisconsin golfer. After playing until the dark on Sunday, the player managed to get a few minutes of the Packers victory over Pittsburgh in the super bowl. Being the responsible father, Wilson even had to attend his kids and tuck them in before he could relax.
Starting the final round on Monday, Wilson, who currently resides in Elmhurst, Illinois, was two strokes ahead of Dufner. Posting a 2-under 69 in the final round, Jason had made a 66 due to birdies on the 16th and 17th hole. Both the players had got themselves at 18 under par when they went into the playoff.
The self-described cheese-headed golfer earned a total of $1.098 million due to his win last weekend.
Wilson opened the season with a victory in the Sony Open which earned him his first trip to the Masters. Then he grabbed Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Wilson's major victory since turning professional in 1996 was at the Honda Classic in March 2007, where he triumphed in a four-way playoff. This victory lifted Wilson into the top 100 of the Official World Golf Rankings. He also had three victories on the third-tier NGA Hooters Tour between 1998 and 2001.
Dufner, the Auburn University Class of 2000 graduate, only made two birdies throughout the tournament. Even though he didn’t win the title, the player gave quite a performance. Dufner’s last best result was a tie for second at the 2009 Deutsche Bank Classic.
Overall, with all the golfers giving their best shot, the Phoenix Open was finally conquered by Mark Wilson.
