Question:

Marked Hermit Crab Shells?

Recently while buying supplies for our hermit crabs at the local Petsmart we decided that since its been a while since we got new shells for the crabs and they don't seen to even give a second look to what's in the tank already that we would check out the shells at the store for potential new shells for the crabs upon further inspection of the non-painted shells we noticed that Petsmart had started to write the shell's size (L, XL) inside the opening of the shell in what appeared to be permanent marker like a sharpie or something like that. I'm guessing so the cashiers know what size to charge for. I know through previous research that painted shells are bad because of paint chips and other things but what about these sizes be written inside with marker? Is this safe for our crabs or should we avoid these like the painted ones? Also we want to find someone who can help give us advice when needed through email or something so if you want to help us please contact me.

  1. Marker pen doesn't work quite like paint, and won't chip so it shouldn't be dangerous. Plus I doubt they'd write on them if it were bad for the crab, so it should be fine!!!

I'm not really an expert or anything but I can do my best to help you out.
