Question:

Marketing Career Question?

I've considered many many degrees/career paths, the easiest thing I know is just ask. So here I go, I studied marketing in junior college and aced it. (My now husband, and I were the only two to make A's and we weren't even business majors!) Now I'm considering it alongside an english degree. My big thing in work is customer service, I love helping people and am very creative. My biggest question is what is the bad side of marketing as far as a job? Marketing Specialist, Advertising, any job that falls in that field? I worry about ethics, morals and keeping values in my job, that's my #1 priority. So if you can help me in my searching I'd really appreciate it!!!

  1. Sorry for those other bozo's. They didn't even answer the question. I've worked in sales and in marketing, and I've been an assistant in sales and marketing divisions of various companies. How ethical you are is entirely up to you. I sold cars for a while and I just determined before hand to be as honest as I can. Did my managers want me to lie? Of course? Did I? NO.

Marketing is different from sales, although many companies group the divisions together. Marketing is more "advertising" and sales is just that. Pushing the product.

An English degree with marketing is good. Journalism with marketing is good. Graphic design is also good.

Sales and marketing are exciting positions. You're always on the move, constantly changing. It's fast and fun. But it's also pressure. You're competing with yourself and with other salespeople. That's the downside. The pressure and the hours.

Up side is it's totally creative (marketing) and fun. And it's a little exciting seeing something you created (a marketing piece) generate revenue. A little humbling too if you think that your words convinced someone to make a decision.

I'd go for it if I were you. Sales and Marketing are things that you can always bank on for jobs. Companies are always hiring new sales and marketing professionals.

    Good luck to you
