Markieff and Marcus Morris: Twin brothers just seven minutes apart – again: NBA Draft Special
There are some things, which just make you believe that God has something special in store for us all.
When Markieff Morris and Marcus Morris, the twins who played for Kansas State last year, went to the Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets on the 13th and 14th pick on the NBA Draft night, it was yet another sign of heavenly intervention.
Markieff is the older of the two, born seven minutes before younger brother Marcus. There rebirth into the NBA, ironically, followed the same pattern. Markieff was drafted first by the Phoenix Suns and exactly and around 7 minutes later, the Houston Rockets drafted Marcus as the 14th overall pick.
It was the culmination of a long journey for the twins and the beginning of a new one. However, up till now the brothers had played side by side, from here on in they have to go their own separate ways. It’s a realization that seemed to have dawned on younger brother Marcus when Markieff’s name was called as the pick of the Phoenix Suns.
As the elder brother left the green room to head for the podium, Marcus seemed to give into emotion in a touching moment, realizing his days of playing with his twin brother, of living together were over and they would now head to different teams in different cities.
However he regained some composure and joked on air about it,
"It ain't the end of the world. I'll see him again," he said. "I mean, I'll send him flowers or some fruit. It'll be good."
That was before his name was called. As fate would have it, Marcus was the next pick going to the Rockets. His brother was glad,
"Once I was called, I still had a little, you know, a little pressure on me waiting for my brother to be called," Markieff Morris told reporters. "Once he was called, it just came off, and we are both grateful and thankful."
Markieff Morris is the taller of the two players and plays at the power forward position. Marcus on the other hand is shorter and perhaps doesn’t have a defined position, he is still though regarded as the more talented of the two.
Still the Suns went with Markieff as their pick maybe because he has the qualities they require the most, with their GM Lance Blanks admitting that Markieff’s toughness was a big reason behind their choice.
The Rockets would be happy in turn to have grabbed a talented player who can play power or small forward and his versatility could stand them in good stead in the future.
On draft night however, the two brothers were just concentrating on the moment and Marcus Morris reflected on what it meant for the Morrisess,
"It's just amazing. It's just amazing how things play out," Marcus Morris said. "[I'm] just thanking God. He really has a plan for us. It just plays out the exact way we wanted it to. It's just so amazing."
