Marleen Veldhuis captures Women’s 50m freestyle gold: Day seven – British Gas Swimming Championships
Marleen Veldhuis of Netherlands captured gold medal of the Women’s Guest 50m freestyle on seventh day of the 2012 British Gas Swimming Championships at the London Aquatics Centre on Friday, March 9.
Apart from the Olympic selection trials of their national swimmers, the British Championship offers a chance to international swimmers to enter the Olympic pool by competing with each other in the Guest events.
Veldhuis remained prominently ahead of her challengers in the single lap freestyle event and devastated hopes of her challengers, who were eyeing the title of the event. With her tremendous efforts, she secured top finish on the victory stand by posting
a time of 24.49 seconds.
She was followed by Jolien Sysmans of Belgium, who stayed 0.98 seconds away from her former finisher and settled on the victory stand for silver medal by clocking a time of 25.47 seconds.
With her eye-catching performance, Sysmans edged out her rival, Hinkelien Schreuder of Netherlands, who remained just 0.12 seconds behind and posted a time of 25.59 seconds for bronze medal.
The third position holder was trailed by Alessandra Marchioro of Brazil, who was just 0.05 seconds slower from surpassing Schreuder and transpired on the finishing end as fourth position holder by clocking a time of 25.64 seconds.
She was chased by Hannah Wilson of Hong Kong, who finished fifth in the event by ending her swim in a time of 25.71 seconds. With her wonderful efforts, Wilson remained 0.12 seconds ahead of Fan Guo of China, who clocked a time of 25.83 seconds for sixth
position.
In the meantime, the crowd witnessed gruelling efforts of Yue Li of China, who submitted a time of 25.89 seconds and ended seventh. The last spot of the race was obtained by Claire Vilshed of Sweden, who was only 0.30 seconds slower from her preceding swimmer
and reported a time of 26.19 seconds for eighth position.
Furthermore, the session ended after the conclusion of all scheduled events while the podium finishers received awards and accolades for their undisputed swims in the 50m discipline at the prize distribution ceremony of the championship.
