Hi

Can anybody please tell me when my Marlin 1894c .357 underlever was made, its serial number is...

99071349.

Also my friends and I have booked a 300 yard target at our local range to use our .308 rifles on,does anyone know if the .357 magnum round will carry that far or should I leave the Marlin at home?

Its just informal target shooting we do.

Thanks

  1. Go over to Leverguns.com... there is a "resources" list on the front page... dig around..they link a Marlin serial number list that will date your rife. There are a couple of Marlin forums that can hook you up with dates too..

.357 at 300 yards? Shooting paper on a range may not be a lot of fun.

However, we have had good sucess hitting steel drums and gongs at that range with .357 pistols and rifles. We have a couple of miles of "nothing" out here. To hit the long range targets you have to fire a ranging shot (or 6 lol) and learn to walk the rounds on target.

Once you get the hang of ranging and learn what the sight pictures should be for the distance it's pretty easy to hit a 36" wide target at 300 yard or longer.

  2. I can't tell you when your gun was made but the .357 will easily carry to 300 yards.

Its maximum range is well over 1 mile when fired from your rifle.

At 300 yards it will drop significantly more than the .308 due to its much lower velocity.

  3. My dad has one of those. At least its a Marlin 357 carbine. Fun little gun to shoot. I dont know when it was made for sure. He bought it after I was born so it could be anywhere from 25-30 years old for sure. Sometime in the 70's or early 80's when he bought that one new is what Im sayin. 300 Yards would be a really really long shot for that gun, but I wouldnt leave it home. It would be fun just to see if you could hit with any degree of accuracy at that range. Its not made for that distance and I sure wouldnt want to depend on it for that but as I said. Fun to shoot and fun to see if you could do it at that range.

Again, dont leave it at home, you know it isnt a 300 yard gun, but it isnt like you are out trying to shoot a deer with it at 300 yards. You are target shooting, and half the fun of that is pushing the limit to see what you can do. At worst you will fail miserably at hitting the target at that range, at best you guys will have some success and will have fun doing it.

  4. At 300 yards your 357 Magnum drops 59.6 inches.* Leave it at Home.* Contact Marlin Firearms Co. to find out when it was manufactured by giving them the serial number.*

  5. The date should be 99

Marlin  switched from  subtracting the first two numbers from 2000 to get the date  to the first two numbers of the serial being the actual DOM in 1990

300 yards is asking a whole lot from a .357

It is commonly considered a 100 yard gun

But it would be a lot of fun to try

If you don't have to pay a per gun admission why not see if it can do it and then come back with a range report

    That would be interesting reading

Elmer Kieth is credited with hitting a running deer at 450 yards with a 44 mag handgun and is supposed to have been able to make 300 yard shots with 357 handguns at will so anything is possible

  6. Hi Midge.  I'm thinking that the .357 Magnum even out of the longer barrel of your carbine will not reach a 300 yard target with any degree of accuracy.  If it does carry that far the bullet will be tumbling along.

As far as manufacture date you might want to contact Marlin.  That I know of they don't have a web-site that provides that info.  The "C" after the Model # 1894 merely designates that it is the 'carbine' version of the Model 1894.  Your serial number is in the millions which also tells me it is of a more recent manufacture.  In other words, 'new.'

By the way, don't stress out about publishing the serial number.  It is only an urban legend that people can use a serial number to steal your gun or your identity.  Whoever intends to do so by necessity would first have to file a police report.  Do know how much trouble a person can get into by filing a false police report.  The police are not stupid.  It would be better for this person to have just stolen the gun in the first place.

Good luck and if that .3-5-7 does hit the target at 300 yards please post a comment to let us know!
