Marlon Byrd's 12th inning hit guides Chicago Cubs over Houston Astros 4-3 – MLB Update
The Chicago Cubs regained their poise on Friday, September 16 to beat the Houston Astros 4-3 at Wrigley Field. Having lost the last game to the Cincinnati Reds, the Cubs went aggressively against the Houston Astros to win the game.
This came when Marlon Byrd scored a single in the 12th inning after Matt Garza pitched a remarkably solid spell of nine innings. Also, quite shockingly, this is for the first time in the Astros’ history that they have lost more than 97 games in
a season, as they currently are standing at 99.
Garza received kudos for his exceptionally good performance in the game, allowing three runs in nine innings with a 3.51 Era. "It is what it is, man," Garza said. "It's one of those situations where I said, 'Here's my best. What do you got?' He guessed right
and beat me.”
The Astros engaged in a big argument over the 12th inning single of Byrd, but the objection was ruled out. "I was right over top of it, so I had a really good look," Johnson said. "Once I saw it hit foul I just tried to make contact with it because
the ball's dead, you know? ... We'll just move on. People make mistakes."
Carlos Less homered in the second inning against Garza to give the Astros an early 1-0 lead which was maintained by Wandy Rodriguez who pitched a decent two innings. However, as he came to pitch the third, Geovany Soto homered to level the score.
The game saw an upward surge in the sixth inning when Jeff Baker singled to left against Wandy Rodriguez and Alfonoso Soriano singled to centre to make it 3-1 for the Chicago Cubs. As the innings came to an end, Matt Garza threw some strong pitches to maintain
the team’s lead.
It was not until the ninth inning, when the Cubs seemed poised to score a victory (so did Matt Garza) when Carlos Lee hit a two-run homer to bring a new exciting twist in the game as it stood tied 3-3.
The relief pitchers of both teams then threw unplayable pitches to contain the respective hitters. Everything seemed working for the Astros until Marlon Byrd’s infield single in the 12th.
"We don't do anything the easy way around here," manager Mike Quade said of the Cubs, who were coming off an 11-inning loss in Cincinnati on Thursday night.
Byrd singled and changed the course of the game, taking an exciting 4-3 victory for the Chicago Cubs against the straining Houston Astros. The Cubs put in a tremendous effort as they fought hard throughout the game to get a much needed victory.
