Marlon Byrd and Casey Coleman shine as Chicago Cubs rout Florida Marlins, 5-1 – MLB Update
Chicago Cubs’ outfielder, Marlon Byrd and starter Casey Coleman both had an outstanding day as Byrd hit one homer with two RBIs and Coleman threw five dominant innings in the Cubs’ 5-1 victory over the Florida Marlins at Sun Life Stadium, Florida, on May
19.
Byrd expressed his winning excitement as, “This game is weird. To play the way we did in Cincinnati -- we should have won. Here we get two wins against a team that is very good.”
The Cubs posted their first run in the second inning and led off with 1-0 when Reed Johnson doubled to left-field spot and Carlos Pena scored a single run. The third inning passed score-less due to impressive throws of the pitchers.
The Cubs rallied again in the fourth inning and extended their lead 3-0 by adding two runs. Byrd struck a one-run homer (384 feet) off the left-field spot and Aramis Ramirez singled on the drive of Starlin Castro. The pitchers raised the momentum of their
teams by restricting the batters from scoring any run from the fifth to the seventh inning.
Coleman did not give away a run on four hits with five walks. He struck out seven batters. The Cubs’ relievers also pitched superbly as they permitted just run on their combined three inning pitches. Coleman was satisfied with his performance and said, “In
some ways I consider myself lucky. But you have to make pitches, and I feel like I did that for the most part. This summer at Wrigley is going to be a lot of fun.”
In the eighth inning, the Marlins scored their initial run when Mike Stanton hit a solo homer (409 feet) to left-field. The score-card was 3-1 at the end of eighth inning. The Cubs led off with 5-1 during ninth inning by the two scoring runs of Koyie Hill
and Kosuke Fukudome on the drive of Castro off the left-centre field position.
The Marlins’ Manager Edwin Rodriguez was disappointed with the loss and said, “That's pretty much the story. It's not a matter of lacking effort or intensity, it's just not going our way right now.”
Chris Volstad had a bad day as he pitched five innings and gave away three runs.
