Marlon Byrd’s double RBIs help Chicago Cubs defeat St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 - MLB Update

Chicago Cubs’ centre-fielder, Marlon Byrd had an unforgettable day with the bat as he took one run with two RBIs and went 2-for-4 with an average of .313 in the Cubs’ 6-3 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium, St. Louis on July 31.
The first five innings of the game were in support of the pitchers as they struck-out many batters on their outstanding pitches. During the first inning Starlin Castro was grounded out to third base, Reed Johnson grounded out to short-stop and Aramis Ramirez
popped out towards first base.
Cardinals also seemed powerless at the bottom of the first inning as Jon Jay made his way towards second base on an infield single while Skip Schumaker grounded out to first base, Albert Pujols flied out to centre-field and Matt Holliday struck-out looking.
In the fourth inning, Jay was grounded out to short-stop while Pujols popped out to short-stop and Holliday struck-out swinging without giving his team even a single run. Conversely, the Cubs missed some runs during the fifth inning as Byrd lined out to
third base, at centre-field Carlos Pena flied out as Alfonso Soriano grounded out.
During the sixth inning, the Cubs exploded four quick runs while the Cardinals were able to blast just three runs to cut their deficit 4-3. Castro hit a ground rule double to deep right-centre and Kyle Hills scored the first run for the Cubs. The second,
third and fourth run for the Cubs was taken by Johnson, Castro and Ramirez, respectively.
On the other side, Lance Berkman struck a big homer (412 feet) towards right-centre upon which Jay and Pujols completed two runs jointly to end the sixth inning. Seventh and eighth inning again went without any run and the score-board was unmoved. Cubs’
starter, Ryan Dempster pitched his six innings with an ERA of 4.96 and gave up three earned runs on seven hits. He allowed only a single walk and struck-out six batters on his 99 pitches.
In the ninth inning, the Cubs got a 6-3 lead by posting two runs as Soriano homered (383 feet) towards left-field and Byrd added one run. After a hard fought win, the Cubs avoided their sweep against the Cardinals but lost the three-game series 2-1.
