Marlon Byrd’s much needed hit gives Chicago Cubs a 7-5 victory over Florida Marlins – MLB Update
The Chicago Cubs put an end to their losing streak and beat the Florida Marlins 7-5 at Sun Life Stadium, Miami on Wednesday, May 18.
The game was full of excitement as the Marlins would have the upper-hand for most part, but the Cubs would then return with more zeal. Reed Johnson, the pinch-hitter for the Cubs, was remarkably good and brought the game to a tie with his two-run homer in
the sixth inning.
Marlon Byrd, on the other hand, kept the march going for the Cubs with another homer in the eighth inning and gave the team a win that it had sorely needed.
"We've been doing small ball," Byrd said. "At the same time we need to put up some power numbers. You need to get pitchers worried about the long ball, not just singles. When we start adding that to our game, it's going to make us a better hitting team."
Florida kept the foundation of a solid game in the first inning with Hanley Ramirez’s single. Darwin Barney followed with a single for Chicago that levelled the score. The Cubs took a lead in the fifth inning with Barney and Castro’s singles, as the score
went to 3-1.
However, the Marlins opened the floodgate of runs in the fifth inning as Gaby Sanchez scored the second run for the team. Greg Dobbs then hit a two-run homer that made the score 4-3 for Florida. Mike Stanton’s single took it to 5-3 for the Marlins.
It was here that Johnson’s two-run homer brought the score level, making it 5-5 in the sixth inning. Ricky Nolasco gave up two hits in the inning that resulted in two runs.
Baker Byrd’s homer to left broke the tie and gradually paved the way for Chicago’s victory, as he completely changed the map of the game with his single, giving a potentially winning 7-5 victory to the Cubs.
Carlos Marmol gave up only one hit in the 9th inning and did not allow any run to the Marlins’ hitters and sealed the 7-5 victory for Chicago.
