Marlon Lipke and Marco Fernandez qualify for Round 4 at San Miguel Pro Zarautz
Germany’s Marlon Lipke and Brazil’s Marco Fernandez made their way through into the fourth round (Round of 24) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz after claiming victory in their respective Round 3 (Round of 48)
heat that went down at the primary event site of Zarautz in Basque Country, Spain, on Friday, August 31.
Brazil’s Tomas Hermes finished behind Lipke in second place to accompany the latter into the next round, while Canary Island’s Jonathan Gonzalez and Argentina’s Marcelo Rodriguez finished in third and fourth place respectively, consequently getting eliminated
from the competition.
The eighth heat saw Australia’s Matt Banting accompany Fernandez to the next round after finishing in runner-up place. Brazil’s Halley Batista and Australia’s Ty Watson rounded out the bottom-two positions, which resulted in their premature ejection from
the contention for the event title.
The thrilling surfing action continued at the main event site, with the upcoming surfing talent pushing themselves beyond limit to make an impression on the huge crowd that was in attendance. The strong onshore winds and three-to-four foot waves pretty much
described the challenge that the surfers had to face while of course competing against each other.
Looking in great touch during the seventh heat, Lipke put on an energetic performance to eventually get hold of a 6.83 and 8.00-point ride, thus finishing with a  heat-total of 14.83 points , which served to take him through into the next round.
Hermes made the Round 4 cut as well after finishing with a heat-total of 12.36 points, which included a 5.93 and 6.43 points respectively.
Gonzalez and Rodriguez got eliminated from the competition after finishing with a heat-total of 10.16 and 9.27 points respectively.
The next heat featured an outstanding performance by Fernandez as he got the better of Banting, Batista and Watson.
The Brazilian surfer scored an 8.17 off his first business-wave and soon added an additional 6.93 points to his account, thus moving to a heat-total of 15.10 points. It proved to be a winning heat-total, therefore moving him into the next round.
Banting scored a couple of scores in the six-point range to eventually finish with a heat-total of 12.67 points. The scored extended his life in the event.
Batista finished in second place with a heat-total of 10.90 points, while Watson at the bottom of the result table after registering a heat0total of 4.23 points.
