Marlon Samuels refuses to go to India, fears interrogation
West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels has refused to go to India as a replacement for the injured all-rounder Dwayne Bravo for the ICC World Cup 2011 due to fears of being interrogated in the country.
Marlon Samuels faced a two-year ban from all forms of cricket by International Cricket Council after he was found guilty of leaking information to a bookie in India in 2006.
After Samuel’s refusal, Guyana leg spinner Davendra Bishoo has been selected as a replacement for Dwayne Bravo.
Corporate Communication Officer of the West Indies Cricket Board Imran Khan did not comment upon the matter. He said, “All I can state what is already known, that http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Davendra-Bishoo-c52569 has been chosen as Dwayne Bravo's replacement.”
Samuels started playing cricket again in October 2010 after his ban was lifted. The middle-order batsman has been in sublime form in the regional cricket as he struck a double century against Guyana at the start of the season and also struck hundreds against
Barbados and Leeward Islands.
Apart from his performances in the first-class tournament, Samuels is also the top scorer of West Indies’ domestic T20 tournament. On top of that, he is more than useful with his off-spinners and could have played a big part for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 in the ongoing
tournament.
Samuels followed the footsteps of two South African cricketers, Herschelle http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 because of the fear that they might be arrested after the match-fixing charges brought forward by Indian Police.
West Indies’ vice-captain Dwayne Bravo twisted his knee while trying to field off his own bowling against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 in their opening match of the tournament. He was later ruled out of the mega event after the doctors advised him a one-month rest.
Bravo is considered as one of the most important players in the West Indian line-up and his absence would definitely be felt in cricket’s flagship tournament.
