Marne Erasmus and Craig Benson impress at the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games
Marne Erasmus and Craig Benson won the Women’s 50m butterfly and Men’s 100m breast-stroke respectively, on the primary day of the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games, held at Isle of Man, on September 9.
Erasmus was the most dominant swimmer of the butterfly discipline, as she ended her swim with a timing of 26.56 seconds. The second position of the event was secured by Sophia Batchelor of New Zealand, as she posted a time of 26.82 seconds for the silver
medal. Batchelor remained in a marginal lead over her subsequent competitor, Vanessa Puhlmann of Australia, as she posted a time of 27.38 seconds for the third position of the swim.
In the meantime, Rachael Kelly of England was the fourth fastest swimmer of the event, as she submitted an effort of 27.75 seconds. The English player was followed by Fiona Donnelly of Scotland and Charlotte Bryan of Wales, as they remained only 0.21 seconds
behind Kelly and concluded their swims with a same time of 27.96 seconds for the fifth position. Kelly’s team-member, Laura Vertigans was the seventh best finisher of the event, as she reported in a time of 28.01 seconds.
In the Men’s breast-stroke discipline, Benson presented a heart-winning effort of 59.63 seconds for the gold medal. Benson was the only swimmer to post a sub-one minute effort in the 100m event, as the rest of his competitors touched the wall after one minute.
He was followed by Tommy Sucipto of Australia, as he clocked a time of 1 minute and 01.15 seconds for the silver medal. Sucipto was in a significant lead of 5.22 seconds over Kurt Benjamin, who reached the podium for the bronze medal with a timing of 1 minute
and 06.37 seconds.
Moments later, the arena witnessed the gruelling efforts of Omiros Zagkas of Cyprus, who was just a touch away from the bronze medallist and completed his swim in a fourth best time of 1 minute and 06.56 seconds. Zagkas was chased by Guernsey’s Joshua Lewis,
who remained almost half a second behind his preceding swimmer and submitted a time of 1 minute and 07.12 seconds. Next was Giovanni Guarino of Jersey, who earned sixth position of the breast-stroke event by producing a time of 1 minute and 07.27 seconds.
The arena enjoyed the noteworthy efforts of all participants in their particular events, while four scheduled meets are yet to take place in the first session. In addition, the winners were placed on the medal rostrum for their laudable efforts in main events
after the completion of the session.
