Marquez’s sixth round knockout of Manny Pacquiao wins ESPN KO of the Year – Boxing News
As expected, Mexican fighter Juan Manuel Marquez’s knockout victory over Filipino fight king Manny Pacquiao has been rated as Knockout of the Year by ESPN, sports network.
Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez went head to head for the fourth time earlier this month on December 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Even though the former WBO welterweight titlist was winning the showdown, a sudden right hand counter from Marquez
made him lie on the mat motionless for a couple of seconds.
Of course, the knockout in itself was a beauty but what was more shocking was the fact that the Filipino had never been knocked out this way ever before. It was the first time Pacquiao lost his conscious and was there on the canvas face flat.
“The knockout was as aesthetically pleasing as it was shocking and historically significant. Obviously, it's the 2012 ESPN.com knockout of the year,” read an article from ESPN.
Not only did the knockout is being ranked among the best knockouts of this year, it has also impacted Pacquaio’s ranking on the Ring Magazine’s pound for pound rankings. The Filipino was previously being ranked at the top but now he is on the seventh number.
“Donaire authored the 2011 knockout of the year with his sick stoppage of Fernando Montiel to win two bantamweight titles. This crushing knockout of Arce wasn't far off as Donaire wrapped up his 2012 fighter of the year campaign and retained his junior featherweight
title in emphatic fashion,” the article read.
Pacquiao and Marquez’s rivalry is already being rated as one of the most thrilling rivalries of all time. The Filipino has defeated Marquez twice with points victory but it was the first time their fight ended up in a knockout. Even though it was Pacquiao
who was going for a knockout shot, Marquez was lucky to get his hands there first.
For now, the Pac-man would be depressed to know that he is not the pound for pound king anymore. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is finally ranked number one without any disputes or claims from Pac-man’s fans.
