The quarterfinals of the men’s doubles competition at the 2011 AEGON Pro-Series Loughborough played on November 9, 2011featured the British team of Jonny Marray and Jamie Delgado play against the Slovenian pair of Aljaz Bedene
and Grega Zemlja. The British pair won the match 6-3, 6-2.
As the first set progressed, both teams scored an ace each. Delgado/Marray conceded double faults twice in the set while their opponents did not concede any. The British team was better in their first serves as they had a 50% first
serve winning ratio as compared to the 33% winning rate their opponents had secured.
Delgado/Marray won 79% points on their first serve, as they were consistent in their service deliveries and constantly keeping a lead over their opponents. The British players saved all five of their breakpoints, which made them
sustain their lead in the first set, making their stance a concrete one.
Bedene/Zemlja were not taking advantage of their opponent’s errors, that is why they remained behind them in the first set.The Slovenian pair did not concede any double faults in the first set, which showed they were not being
offensive in their service games, an intentional act they were doing for not giving away points to their opponents.
Their offensive game play did not help them in going ahead of the British players as Delgado/Marray won the first set 6-3.
With the second set in progress, Delgado/Marray wanted to finish the match at the earliest. They scored three aces with a double fault once in the set. Bedene/Zemlja were not able to deliver any ace and did not concede any double
fault either.
The British team was again proving to be a strongly bonded pair as they showed consistency in their service games. They won 85% points from their first serves as compared to toe 60% points won by Bedene/Zemlja. In the points won
on second serve, both teams were almost equal with 63% points won by Delgado/Marray and 67% points won by their opponents.
Delgado/Marray were effectively playing their service games as they did not let their opponents to break their serves. On the other hand, Bedene/Zemlja could not save both of their breakpoints in the second set.
The Slovenian team had a 71% first serve winning ratio, nine percent higher than Delgado/Zemlja, but it was the British duo, which was able to maintain its superiority in the second set.
On a whole, Delgado/Marray played a decent run with the racquets, as they did not lose points in both of the sets and remained in the lead. Delgado/Marray will now play compatriot team of David Rice and Sean Thornley in the semi
finals of the 2011 AEGON Pro-Series Loughborough.
