Marray/Nielsen dump Qureshi/Rojer to reach the doubles quarter-final – Wimbledon Championships 2012
Number eighth seeded Pak-Dutch tandem of Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer finally fall out of the Wimbled Championships Men’s Doubles draw on Tuesday. The wildcard duo of Jonathan Marray and Frederik Nielsen hunted down
the eighth seeded pair in a gruelling five-setter brawl of the third round, settling the final score line at 7-6(5), 7-6(4), 6-7(7), 5-7, 7-5, to earn a berth in the quarter-finals.
It was one of the most thrilling doubles encounters of this year’s Grand Slam tournaments, with both teams stretching their opponents to their limits. The opening three sets were decided in the tie-breaker rounds, whilst the last
two were extended to 12 games apiece, depicting the intensity of the competition between the two duos.
Qureshi and Rojer belted 13 aces and secured 93 out of 124 first serve points in the matchup. Their opponents spilled out 10 double faults in the contest but won 110 out of 143 points on their first serves to take the better of
the eighth seeded rivals. Both teams registered two break points apiece in the matchup but the Brit-Dane duo kept winning the all-important points on regular occasions to remain on top of the contest all the way.
The contest didn’t witness any break point in the opening 26 games, with Marray and Nielsen winning the first two sets in tie-breaker rounds to get 2-0 ahead. Qureshi and Rojer posted some solid resistance in the opening two sets
but it seemed to be just a matter of time that they couldn’t bag the critical points to remain on the back foot.
Marray and Nielsen were aiming for a straight sets victory but their opponents made their last attempt to remain alive in the tournament. The eight seeded duo claimed the third set tie-break to curtail the sets score to 1-2.
Qureshi and Rojer went on with their winning roll in the fourth set and held their opening six serves to reach 6-5. They finally stung a break point in the 12th game to pocket the fourth set at 7-5, bringing the matchup
back on even terms at 2-2.
The decisive set of the match was a complete replication of the fourth set except it was the wildcard duo which broke serve in the 12th game to conclude the marathon victory at 7-5 and disposing of Qureshi and Rojer
from the Wimbledon Championships. Marray and Nielsen will next play combination of James Cerretani and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the quarter-finals.
