Marrero/Verdasco beat Dutra Silva/Munoz-De La Nava to win title – German Tennis Championships 2012
In a title match fight between two unseeded teams, David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco of Spain knocked down the Brazilian-Spanish tandem of Rogerio Dutra Silva and Daniel Munoz-De La Nava in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to capture the
Bet-at-home Open German Tennis Championships crown on Sunday.
The contest begun steadily by both teams, as they held their serves in the opening six games to square off the score at 3-3. Marrero and Verdasco snatched a breakthrough in the seventh and held their next serve, attaining a 5-3
advantage. The following two games went with serve and the Spaniards won the opener 6-4.
The second set saw both combinations breaking each other on a number of occasions. Marrero/Verdasco and Dutra Silva/Munoz-De La Nava exchanged blows in the first four games, levelling the score at 2-2. The subsequent two were held
by both teams to take the proceedings to 3-3. It was an all Spanish show afterwards, as they did not allow their opponents to claim even a single game, winning three back to back to grab it 6-3.
Both teams were unable to hit any ace, committing a total of two double faults in the match. Marrero and Verdasco maintained a first delivery percentage of 74, sealing 27 of the 39 points on them. They put together a below average
performance on the second serves, losing 10 of the 14 points. However, the Spanish duo responded bravely to their rivals’ first deliveries, converting 16 of the 31 of them into points.
With this win, Marrero and Verdasco have entered the list of top 10 teams in the ATP Doubles Team Rankings Race to London.
Talking to the reporters after the match, Verdasco stated, "I'm very happy, of course. It's our second [ATP World Tour] 500 title of the year and it will help us to be close to the Top 8 for the chance to be in London at the end
of the year. It's a very important victory for us."
The left-hander was happy with his combination’s performance during the weeklong event, as he said, "I think we played well the whole week, but everyone was a tough match.”
Marrero added, "I'm so happy for this week, last week, for the year. It's a pleasure to play with Fernando, who plays unbelievable singles and unbelievable doubles. I hope that we can continue like this and can play the Masters
in London this year."
This was Marrero and Verdasco’s fourth title of the season, with all of them being on clay.
