Marrero/Verdasco overpower Granollers/Lopez to win title – Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012
David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco of Spain ousted compatriots Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the final at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel
in Acapulco, Mexico on Saturday.
Marrero/Verdasco and Granollers/Lopez held their serves in the first seven games of the opening set, taking the score to 4-3 in favour of the former. Marrero and Verdasco grabbed their opponents’ serve in the eighth and consolidated
on it to capture the set 6-3.
The Spaniards fired two aces and 88 percent of the first serves, winning a whopping 18 of the 23 points on them. Marrero and Verdasco did not come across any break point and capitalised on one of the three opportunities they received
in the opener.
Both teams broke each other twice in the first eight games of the second set, levelling the score at 4-4. Marrero and Verdasco hit the final blow in the ninth and served it out at 5-4.
Ranked 21st in the world, Marrero and Verdasco delivered four aces and a couple of double faults. The Spaniards smacked 72 percent of the first serves and converted 15 of the 23 of them into points. Marrero and Verdasco
also impressed with their fine returns, bagging a total of 16 of the 30 points on them. The Spaniards put away five of the seven break threats they encountered and made full use of two of the five chances they got in the second set.
Marrero and Verdasco outplayed their opponents in an hour and 20 minutes.
Earlier, Verdasco was thrashed by his countryman David Ferrer in straight sets 1-6, 2-6 in the final of the singles event.
Giving interview to the ATPWorldTour.com, Verdasco said, "The feeling after winning the doubles is much better now. So I'm glad I won one of the two finals. I think we had similar games because we were all Spanish. We're all baseline
players. The match was close. The key was we just had a better day."
Jubilant Marrero said, "I am very happy. This is the fourth time I've played with Fernando. The first two times, I played really bad, and now I've started to play good. Last week, we played well and won a tournament, and now we've
done it this week as well.”
This was Marrero and Verdasco’s second title in two weeks. They upset second seeds Michal Mertinak and Andre Sa in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in the final at the Copa Clari in Buenos Aires last week.
