I was just wondering if any progress had been made regarding the re-baptism?
I really enjoyed reading your post as I can also relate to some of the things you said. I am a practicing Roman Catholic hoping to be engaged to a Coptic Orthodox man (we've been together for almost 5 years). Also the issue for me is the re-baptism- the Catholic priest I talked to said I should not be made to convert but that ultimately it was my decision (as long as this did not affect the raising of childern in the Catholic church). So I really do not know what I'm going to do, but after reading so many similar situations on the internet I do not feel so alone anymore. However, it seems that as a Catholic the only option I have is to get re-baptised? Or he can get married in the Catholic church but this would not be accepted by his church (from what I know). As we are both quite involved in our churches it is not an easy decision to make.

I'm really hoping we can solve this soon, but I find it hard to see the light even though (like you) our faith is what has made our relationship strong and what has brought us closer together. It's so frustrating that two Christians who both have God in their lives have to overcome this obstacle to get married.

Anyway, we'll keep talking to our priests and hopefully work something out...

i am a practicing roman catholic and engaged to a coptic orthodox man - we have been in contact with both priests - in order to stay in communion with both of our respective churches the coptic orthodox priest must perform the ceremony which can be anywhere he can travel to (we got the permission of a local greek orthodox priest to perform the ceremony in his church with my fiances coptic orthodox priest and my catholic priest) and the catholic priest must be a witness and can do a blessing during the ceremony - the sticky point is the rebaptism.  the catholic church ofcourse only recognizes that you can only be baptised once as long as it was done with the trinitarian formula and by water.  the coptic orthodox church for some reason does not recognize any other christian baptism as i take it and require a rebaptism of the cathlolic.  the coptic orthodox priest we spoke to said this does not hinder me or convert me from my catholic faith - when we first met, he was humble and kind enough to show how much we have in common with one another rather than our few theological differences - after all we share the same sacraments, apostolic tradition, etc.  The orthodox churches of both the oriental rite (including the coptic church among others) and the eastern rite (which includes the greek orthodox church among others) along with the roman catholic church are closer than any other faith in the world - many seperated later in history especially after the reformation of martin luther and do not believe in the most important sacrament among other things which is the eucharist which is truly the body and blood of Jesus Christ - we are still talking with both priests about the rebaptism as it may not be taken lightly with the catholic church - my fiance and i have been together for 11 years, i a roman catholic american girl and him a coptic orthodox egyptian man born in egypt.  We have been down many hard roads through our relationship together especially coming to marriage and experiencing first hand what happens when the original church was separated from, however, through much prayer things can take a turn for the better - everything happens for a reason and this situation has caused some heartache but in the end has brought us closer together as we respect each other and both our faiths - we look at what we have in common rather than different - it has also brought me on a deeper journey to discover my faith - most important is to talk with both of your respective priests - it may take a while for you to get answers as this really never happens (a catholic marrying a copt) - we had to talk with two orthodox priests because the first one came off a bit rude and started our discussion with all of our differences and some what mocking the catholic church which was not very welcoming or comforting - the second priest was very kind-hearted and very humble and first talked about everything we have in common with a deep respect for both churches - i will tell you this will not be an easy journey but if you pray hard, or if you even get a chance to pray the rosary God will work wonders because with him anything is possible - you may have to talk with many people and find a good humble priest - another important thing is this is a decision between two people and family should not be involved because it will only cause more stress and frustration especially if one family member is not knowledgable in either faith enough to comment on anything involving this inter-faith marriage - it's ok to get feedback and let family members know whats going on but trust me that you will be better off leaving family out of this decision that is ONLY between you and your significant other - ofcourse i am making the assumption that you are already engaged which you may not be - if you are asking this question than this person must be very special to you - if you are both close to you faiths and have that at the center of your lives you guys will benefit and your relationship will grow closer - good luck! hopefully you will check this post again soon and i will update on what we find out of rebaptism
