Question:

Marriage/Divorce prevent me from employment?

I have interviewed for a job where my ex-husband works. He and I are friends and he is okay with this. However since we have been divorced, I have remarried and been divorced. Meanwhile, he never took me off his benefits at his work---so his work thinks we're married. I haven't used his benefits at all since the divorce. I am wondering how likely this will be caught in a background check---its all within a two year period.

  1. You were divorced, remarried, and divorced in 2 years? Wow!

As far as the benefits go, he should have taken you off. You don't control his actions. If you haven't used them then that can be proven as well.  So, don't worry.

  2. it's possible they will find out if you need benefits yourself.

  3. Technically, employers are not supposed to investigate marriages/divorce, etc.  They can do a credit check and check for criminal history, but the reports typically don't include marital status.  If you changed your name when you remarried they may get a clue about it.  Any alias that you've ever used appears on a credit report.

  4. tell him to remove you from his benefits and get your own benefits through employment....this is simple..or find a job somewhere else

  5. Get on it right away and tell them that there was an error and that you were never removed from his benefits. Unless there was some kind of divorce agreement that stated he was responsible for providing you with benefits as part of the divorce settlement.

By being up front about it you will prevent any kind of misunderstanding with your prospective employer.
