Question:

Marriage Visa and Benefits?

I understand that if my fiancée is to be able come to the UK on a Marriage Visa then we must be able to show that she can do so without having to work (until allowed) or have recourse to public funds. However, part of my rent is paid by Housing Benefit and I get Working Tax Credit because my wages are low. Is that likely to be a problem? Thanks in advance.

  1. Either you or your/her family will have to prove you can support her without her claiming any benefits. You will still be able to claim yours, but only as a single person, not including her. If you cant support her, shell have to save up before she comes so shell have enough until she can work. Check it out fully with the citizens advice bureau, they can put you onto the right home office people to speak to as well.

  2. Probably will be a problem I'm afraid - you need to be able to prove that you can support the two of you without any recourse to public funds for the duration of the visa. As you are already claiming benefits for yourself, I doubt if your application would be successful. If you intend to spend the rest of your lives together, is there any way you can get yourseld on a better financial footing? I know it's not that simple - but would be a real help for the visa if you weren't claiming. If you think about your relationship in the long term, I would suggest sorting yourself out financially before applying for the visa - I know how difficult it is being away from someone you love but it is worth it in the long term . Take the time to do it properly. Good luck.

  3. Thats all we need another person in this country living off the tax payers, how come you or she can afford to travel but you get housing benefit

  4. if you can't affor to live without benefits, then why are you getting married?

and doesn't this mean we have yet another person on my tax paying money when your 'wife' comes here?
