Question:

Marriage and a sorority?

I'm in a sorority, and my fiance and I want to get married in two years. I'm a freshman right now and will be about to begin my junior year when we tie the knot. My question is, what happens if you get married before you graduate if you're in a sorority? I mean, what do your responsibilities become, if any? I had heard that you become an alumni, but I don't really know what all that entails. So, any information?

  1. What a terrible idea. Talk about one step up and two steps back.

  2. Don't all sororities have different rules and guidelines?

  3. I got married before I ever graduated from college and I have been in my sorority for 7 years now. What we did is we have a thing called "inactive" which means that if you can't be in school for whatever reason, you can go inactive until you can get your responsibilities in order. I also went inactive when I had my baby 5 months ago. You can still wear your letters and still go and participate in events but what it means is that you can't vote on anything official and you also don't have to worry about attending weekly meetings or mandatory events and functions if you don't want to. The only way you become an alumni as far as I know is only when you graduate from your university.

Your sorority sisters will understand because life happens and sometimes you need to take a step back and work on your life! You can always be active again when the time is right. Are you planning on being in school after you get married? Then you can still be active I'm sure! Don't worry!
