Question:

Marriage - can we be married on a beach in Scotland?

We want to get married on a beach, just us and our close family. Is it possible to do this? We are not religious so it would be a civil ceremony. Is there anyone that would come to marry us instead of us going to a register office?

  1. Bring a warm coat - its bloody windy on most Scottish beaches!

  2. I guess you could get married standing in a bathtub if you wanted. . . . as far as any legalities....check with the laws in your area.

  3. To make it legally binding, a ceremony must take place in a covered structure - so, a building, or in some cases a marquee or a gazebo. I would speak to your local registry office about what they permit. You may have to register the marriage at your registry office, and then have a separate ceremony to celebrate it. Congratulations!

  4. Why not.  They do it all the time in Hawaii.  Please check with your local clergy in the area.  The weather may not cooperate with the timing of your wedding and you should have an alternative place in mind.

  5. Do you have marriage celebrants there?

  6. That sounds beautiful!  I hope you can.

  7. I don't really think that is a good idea. Just get married indoors in a hotel, or something.

  8. I wouldn't have thought so but it is worth asking your local registrar. Locations have to be licensed for a marriage to take place there, and I should imagine that if beaches were licensed alot of people would be using them and they aren't!

  9. You can get married wherever you want too in Scotland, as long as the wedding was legally recognised and you could find a registrar that would be prepared to carry out your wedding on a beach.
