Ok so I got married and on my marriage certificate it says as example: "John doe and Jane parker" even though I told them I wanted to take his name but my maiden name is still on the marriage certificate. Does that mean I cant go get my social and drivers license changed because it doesn't have his last name as mine? Example: "John Doe and Jane Doe"

This is something my mother in law told me. She said I will now have to pay more money to take on his last name. I want to know if this is true or not. I live in the state of Tx FYI.

  1. No--I just checked my marriage license (which is my certificate of marriage) and NO WHERE on there is my new name.  Your mother in law is pulling your leg.  You have to change your name on your social security card and your driver's license.  Note, however your state your name on your social security is how you should also state it on your driver's license.  When you said 'I do', you became Mrs John Doe or Mrs. Jane Doe.  Most women, when they file for their new SS card or DL, they use Jane Parker Doe or Jane Parker-Doe.  It's however you want it.  Some drop their maiden name altogether and use their middle name--Like Jane Sue Doe.  Again, it's however you want to do it.  But you sort of have to stick with your decision after that, so it's easier records wise.

On your marriage license, they always put your maiden name.

So relax.  Your mother in law must not want you taking her son's name for some reason or she's not too bright.

  2. Thats correct.... it states that your husband and you got married... it doesn't state your married name. Your name matches your birth certificate on the marriage certificate. You then take your marriage certificate down to your county courthouse and request a name change and a new social security card. You do have to pay for this, but you're not paying for his name, it is to get a new card. You'll then have to get a new drivers license and such...

Your MIL is sort of full of it, and sounds like she is just trying to stress you out.

  3. yes that is how mine is with my maiden name on the certificate and yes u can still get ur SS card. not in the state of GA all u have to do is take ur certificate and ur old ID and fill out the paper work with his last name and that's all u have to do no extra money is involved

  4. no on a marriage certificate it will show his name and your name with your maiden last name. you are good..

  5. no idea.. best is to talk to state records department... where you went to file for license..

  6. no mine is the same and it is proof of who you were as well as who you are now. so it is right . ive changed my name with no problems

  7. Are you kidding me????  It costs NOTHING to change your name on your social and driver's licence.  Marriage licences never display the married name.  Think about it:  you and your fiance are getting married.  Before you sign the marriage licence, you're still single, thus you still have your maiden names.  So obviously, you take themarriage licence to the SSA office, show it to them, and they give you a new SS card with your new name on it.  Then you do the same thing at the DMV.  It's not possible to have your married name on a license because it would be lying to say you have his name.  Your mother-in-law sounds a bit senile, I'm very sorry to say.

  8. I live in OH and my maiden name is also on our marriage certificate - that's the way it supposed to be. However, when you fill out the paperwork for SS card, etc. use your new name. I had no problems whatsoever. No extra money either - just regular fees.

  9. It won't be an issue.  My marriage certificate was the same way and when I took it to the Social Security office, I was still able to use it as a way to get his last name.

  10. I live in VT and my marriage certificate is the same way its just so they know who you were and who you will be...once you go to change your name it will be on your ss card and other documents. But you have to go and get your name changed..You become Mrs doe the day you get married.

  11. No.  Nicely tell your new mom, that she is wrong.  I just changed my name last month because I was married in May.  You just need to complete an SS-5 form with the social security administration.  http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa....

Then, take your marriage license showing his name and yours, your old DL, and your new social (once it comes) takes about three weeks to the DMV and they will give you a new license.

  12. Are you Mom to the same Noah that built the ark?
