I'm 20 years old from Jerusalem and a u.s citizen, last year I went to Jerusalem for the summer and i fell in love with a guy and now I'm back in the u.s but we're plaining to get married and live in the u.s, but I can't go back to Jerusalem because it will cost me lots of money and he can't come to the states because he does not have a visa, Is it possible to send him the marriage papers so I can work on his papers so he can come to the u.s and live here with me?

  1. As a US citizen, you can apply for a fiance visa for him. You will have to prove it is a valid relationship: where & how you met, how long & how well you know each other, when & where you have been together (plane tickets, letters, photos, etc.). And you have to prove you have sufficient income and assets to support him and guarantee a $30,000 bond. He has to remain in Israel while the application is processed. It will take about a year.

If approved, he can enter the US, and you have 90 days to marry and file for a spousal visa. Again you have to prove a valid relationship, and your ability to support him. He will probably get permission to remain in the US while the visa application is processed. After he gets the spousal visa, he can apply for authorization to work. If approved, he can get an SSN and start looking for a job.

You're only 20, so chances are you have no real education or track record of employment, so proof of ability to support him is going to be difficult.

If you go there and marry, you will have to apply for the spousal visa, prove everything as above, and it will take 2 to 2-1/2 yrs to get the spousal visa. He cannot enter the US until that visa is approved. Since you will be living apart (unless you move there), it will be difficult to prove a valid relationship.

This is time-consuming and expensive. Are you sure you are ready for this? You are awfully young to try to deal with it, and the costs may well be beyond your capacity.

  2. Being that he is from Isreal I would assume it is possible for him to obtain a visa. My advice is for him to get a tourist visa to visit the U.S. I would assume that you are in love and have thought about marriage in the future. A nice little loophole in the U.S. policy says to the effect that it is ok to meet fall in love and realize you can't live without the person. So once he is here before his visa expires get married and then file the proper paper work through INS you will have to pay some fees but it is alot cheaper and easier than a fiance visa. I personally know a couple who did this. and the woman just got her permant green card. they put a two year restriction on the first green card. but they give the second one without restrictons without even having another interview. Also with a visitors visa he can be here generally for up to six months this is alot cheaper than a fiance visa and alot quicker also. You will have to prove that you two have the means to support each other. but while waiting for the paperwork to be aproved he can get a work permit it's not hard to do and if you are both working and finacially stable the goverment will not send him back.

  3. I married a Dane (Denmark) my best advice to you is go through the American Embassy in Jerusalem. It is so much faster then trying to do it here. I hired an attorney to do all the work for me. You need to save all emails, phone bills, love letters, pictures, Airline tickets,Copies of passports. If you are married pictures of the wedding. Letters from the family and friends saying its a good faith marriage. I hope this helps..

    Oh and wedding certificate..

That is sooo funny I got a thumbs down. Look, it took me 6 months to get my husband here. And yes I did the petition of spouse. My attorney said it could take 2 to 5 years doing it through the states.

To what Ibu guru said. If you don't have the money to support him you can get a sponsor. Thats what we did we got my aunt to sponsor him. She had to sign a paper saying that if he needed anything medical or any kind of help she would help him. They took her tax info. And that was it.

This is it I'm done.. If they accept him here then they will give him a temporary green card for two years. It is really really important to start the process of removing restrictions 90 days before his green card expires. You can't do it sooner then 90 days.If you do not get it removed within that 90 day period. He will be deported and won't be aloud back in for ten years..

    Good luck hun!

  4. You'd probably have to marry him over there and then petition for a spouse visa for him to come to the United States, OR you can petition for a fiance visa. I am unsure of the requirements to get a fiance visa, as there are some specific mandates specified, but you can find that at http://www.uscis.gov. (USCIS is United States Citizenship and Immigration Service, formerly INS.)
